Maternal Mental Health
Nurturing Minds, Ensuring Well-being
Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional well-being of women and their partners during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This transformative phase can be accompanied by a wide range of emotions, experiences, and challenges that impact the mental well-being of expecting individuals and their support networks. In LMICs, such as Zimbabwe, the journey of perinatal mental health is shaped by unique factors that warrant attention and support. Women and their partners face a multitude of challenges, including environmental, financial, social, psychological, and physical factors, that influence their mental well-being during this critical time.
Environmental factors play a significant role in perinatal mental health. Limited access to healthcare facilities, inadequate sanitation, and exposure to environmental stressors can contribute to increased stress, anxiety, and vulnerability. The lack of reliable infrastructure and resources in LMICs can further exacerbate the challenges faced by expecting individuals and their families. Financial constraints present another barrier to perinatal mental health. The financial burden of pregnancy-related expenses, coupled with limited access to adequate healthcare coverage, can create anxiety and stress for expectant parents. The struggle to meet basic needs and provide for the growing family can impact mental well-being, adding an additional layer of pressure during the perinatal period.
Is a dedicated mental health organization based in Zimbabwe, Africa. Our mission is to provide essential support, resources, and empowerment to individuals, families, and communities, ensuring access to quality mental health care across the region.
Established in 2019, S.A.L.T Africa embarked on a transformative journey with the aim of strengthening mental well-being and fostering resilience. Our commitment to compassion and understanding drives our work as we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. The Story of S.A.L.T Africa began in Chimanimani, where we faced the immense challenges brought by Cyclone Idai. We recognized the urgent need for mental health support in communities grappling with trauma and grief. Responding to this need, we launched our first assignment, offering therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through a range of innovative modalities.
